A Thorough Analysis of In-text Citations and References based on APA style

The American Psychological Association (APA) has established a style of documentation of sources used in academic writing, mainly in the Social Sciences, like Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, and Education as well.   It is of utmost importance to bear in mind two aspects when following APA style: the in-text citations and the reference page. In-text citations include the author’s name and the publication date of sources. The reference page goes at the end of the paper and it takes its own page. It lists all the sources that a writer has used in a paper. The purpose of the present paper is to analyze the in-text citations and the reference list of the article Beyond Reflection: Teacher Learning as Praxis by Hoffman-Kipp, Artiles, and López-Torres (2003) on the basis of the APA manual 6th edition. The APA manual (2002) states several rules to follow for in-text citations such as: in an author-date style, in-text citations usually require the last name of the author(s)...

Another Opportunity for Marcos: The Rebellious Student

At a prestigious secondary private school in Mar del Plata, there was a boy called Marcos in 1 st year who refused to work or participate in the English class. Apart from that, Marcos behaved terribly bad. He talked in class, distracted his classmates, and interrupted the teacher when she was explaining. Students had English lessons three days a week for one hour. Mrs. Manzanares did not know what to do to make Marcos changed his attitude. She had tried everything. Every time Marcos behaved incorrectly, the teacher had to interrupt the class and talk to the student or even send him to the headmaster’s office. It was exhausting. Since anything the teacher did work, she got frustrated because the situation did not seem to change. Similarly, in the four previous classes that I observed, Marcos kept on misbehaving. Surprisingly, one day, in the middle of an exam, Marcos asked the teacher if he could do it. Shocked, the teacher agreed, and Marcos started to do the exam. When he finis...

Effective tool to enrich Preservice Teachers’ Experiences

Dolk, M., & Den Hertog, J. (2008). Narratives in teacher education.  Interactive Learning Environments , 16 (3), 215-229. DOI:10.1080/10494820802113970   In the Netherlands, student teachers are challenged to produce narratives of paradigmatic classroom situations through a multimedia interactive learning environment (MILE). It is a program presented to help prospective teachers develop narratives as a tool to construct meaning and to bridge the division between theory and practice. (Dolk and Hertog, 2008). It is computer-based and contains a database of real classroom teaching. Thanks to this tool, student teachers will be able to widen their observations. Moreover, by constructing narratives preservice teachers will be helped to reflect upon their own teaching practices. According to Dolk and Hertog (2008), this narrative approach implies a redesign of teacher education. A six-step curriculum design framework is introduced to construct meaning through narratives. Tho...
